From Louisburgh to New York: The Journey of Patience and Commitment

I come from a small town in the West of Ireland called Louisburgh—arguably the most beautiful and serene place in the world. Since 2014, I’ve been living in New York City, which, by contrast, is quite possibly the maddest place on earth. The transition from the peaceful landscapes of Ireland to the bustling streets of NYC has been a journey filled with new experiences, challenges, and lessons about patience and commitment.

The Instant Gratification Culture

When I moved to the U.S., I discovered the convenience of an Amazon Prime Membership. I was amazed at the idea of ordering something and having it delivered to my doorstep within a few hours. This was a stark contrast to the reality in Louisburgh, where even the Wi-Fi is temperamental and can stop working during windy or rainy weather—a common occurrence! If the weather cooperates, delivery times from online stores can range from 3 to 14 days, often with packages ending up at the neighbor's house for a few more days.

Amazon Prime is instant. Really instant! With social media playing a significant role in our lives, we’ve become accustomed to getting what we want immediately—whether it’s a product, a piece of information, or even an emotional response. In just 21 seconds, you can go from feeling happy to sad or even jealous after seeing something online.

The Reality of Long-Term Results

While instant gratification is great for online shopping or scrolling through social media, it’s not the same when it comes to training, achieving results, or reaching your goals. The truth is, anyone selling you a fast track to success is full of crap. People want it now, want it fast, and want to look like someone else, but they don’t want to put in the necessary work.

You see, achieving real, long-term results requires a commitment to constant growth. It means making small, and sometimes large, sacrifices and showing up even on the days when you don't feel like it. Over time—over months or even a year or two—results will come.

The number of people willing to stay in the fight that long dwindles as time goes on. But here’s the encouraging part: if you stick with it, if you push through just one more day, one more milestone, massive change can occur.

Are You Looking for a Shortcut or Long-Term Results?

The question you need to ask yourself is this: Are you looking for a shortcut or are you committed to long-term results? We can all make a decision and a commitment to work towards long-term progress. Instead of focusing on where you want to be in 12 days, get excited about the person you’re going to be 12 months from now. Strive for constant change and challenge. Commit to channeling your energy into becoming a better version of yourself, and make the person in the mirror your main competition.

Reflect on Your Actions

As you go through your day, ask yourself this important question: Are your actions taking you closer to or further away from your goals? It’s a simple yet powerful way to stay on track and ensure that you’re moving in the right direction.

Lessons from This Week

Your Habits Define Your Identity

Your habits are the embodiment of the identity you choose to take on. When you make your bed each morning, you’re embodying the identity of someone who is clean and organized. When you study, you’re embodying the identity of someone who is studious. So, ask yourself: What identity are you embodying today? Who are your habits helping you become?

Quote of the Week

"Before you try to increase your willpower, try to decrease the friction in your environment."
